SIGHTSEEING IN SAN FRANCISCO There's always tons to do in San Francisco, but here are a few things that are off the beaten path and away from the crowds. Camera Obscura and the Musee Mecanique at Lands End- These two small museums are some of the least visited, but the most fun. The Camera Obscura shows a real time image of the ocean, and the Musee Macanique holds an enormous collection of coin-operated mechnical displays and games from the 19th Century. Visit the Sea Lions at Pier 39- Okay, so it's not away from the crowds, but it's free and you can walk along the outside pier to avoid the crush. The sea lions crowd onto floating rafts in a protected marina on the west side of the pier. Visit the Cable Car museum - Also not really away from the crowds, but also free and a fascinating look at how San Francisco's most famous moving landmarks operate. Catch the Powell-Hyde or Powell-Mason cable car and ride it past the museum at Mason and Washington Streets. Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory - 56 Ross Alley - Few people know that fortune cookies were invented in San Francisco. This tiny factory is open late and close to the Cable Car Museum. Pemberton Stairway Walk - This elegant stairway takes you up Twin Peaks and if you make it to the top, will give you some of the most beautiful views of San Francisco from the western side. There are other stairway walks worth investigating, but Pemberton is one of the prettiest. Walk along Crissy Field - This area was recently re-landscaped and offers a lovely place to stroll along the bay towards the Golden Gate Bridge. There's beach, marsh area for birdwatching, a picnic area and a path that takes you to the bridge.
