Museums

A quick look at what's being exhibited at museums in San Francisco in October.

Children's Museums
The Exploratorium - The first hands-on science museum in the world is open every day except Monday. Mathematica, an interactive exhibition by Charles and Ray Eames opens on October 6.

The California Academy of Sciences - San Francisco's natural history museum looks as Russia's Great Voyages to America, 18th century explorers sailing under the auspices of the Russian empire.

The Lawrence Hall of Science - Opening October 6 is Scream-Machines: The Science of Roller-Coasters.

Camera Obscura and the Musee Mecanique at Lands End- These two small museums are some of the least visited, but the most fun. The Camera Obscura shows a real time image of the ocean, and the Musee Macanique holds an enormous collection of coin-operated mechnical displays and games from the 19th Century.

Visit the Cable Car Museum - A fascinating look at how San Francisco's most famous moving landmarks operate. Catch the Powell-Hyde or Powell-Mason cable car and ride it past the museum at Mason and Washington Streets.

Art Museums
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art - San Francisco's newest museum shows a retrospective of the works of Ansel Adams.

The California Palace of the Legion of Honor - This collection of European art is showing the graphic works of Ed Ruschka, and the recently restored tapestry The Triumph of Fortitude through October 7.

The DeYoung Museum is closed until 2005.

The Asian Art Museum - One of the finest collections of Asian art will still be in its building in Golden Gate Park until October 7, when it closes for two years to relocate to the Civic Center.

Golden Gate Park
The Strybing Arboretum - Stroll through a collection of plants that ranges from Mediterranean to tropical cloud forests. (Free)

The Japanese Tea Garden - Left from the 1894 Mid-Winter Exposition in
Golden Gate Park, this oasis covers four acres in the park.
You can also sit and enjoy a pot of tea and crackers inside.
